Review of the 3 most successful
non-prescription weightloss products

Proactol is a new
product for
weightloss and obesity control that can be considered among fat
binders. Its main ingredient is a natural fiber made from dehydrated
leaves (also called pads) from the cactus Opuntia ficus. Opuntia ficus is
a species of cactus from Mexico. It has large, sweet fruits called
tunas that are consumed worldwide. The processed ingredient is
comercialy called NeOpuntia. Developed by French researchers, NeOpuntia
has been subject to several clinical studies that conclusively
demonstrated that it is the first effective, 100% vegetable
fat-blocker.
How it works?
The Opuntia ficus
contains high percentages of fat binding fibers. Once NeOpuntia gets in
touch with ingested fats inside the stomach it immediately binds to
them, preventing the fat from being absorbed by the body. These
unabsorbed fats travel through the intestine and are excreted
naturally.

Is it safe?
Unlike virtually every other
non-prescription weightloss products, Proactol is backed by several
clinical studies carried out under severe conditions in highly
respected medical institutions. These studies have shown that Proactol
is safe and lacks any detectable side effects. Proactol is the first
weight loss product to be approved by the MHRA (Medicines and
Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and it bears the CE stamp of
approval.
Proactol is backed
by a number of health and fitness professionalsincluding
a celebrity doctor, Dr. Adam Carey who is a world famous fitness and
nutrition expert. Dr. Adam Crey has been the co presenter, for all
three series of Celebrity Fit Club. He is also the co-presenter for Sky
Ones program Change theDay
you Die. He
has 19 years experience in the NHS, specialising in reproductive
endocrinology and nutrition. He advises many groups of elite
athletes and celebrities, including Premiership football teams and the
England Cricket Board. He is also the Director of Nutrition for the
England Rugby Football Union and Nutrition Director for Focus on Food -
an educational charity in association with Waitrose

Chitosan
Chitosan is a substance taken
from chitin,
a polysaccharide that makes up the exoskeletons (crust) of crustaceans.
Its processing consists of removal of the shells from shellfish like
shrimp, crabs and lobste, and then the shells are ground and
transformed into a powder. This powder is subject to a chemical
procedure called deacetylation, or put easy, stripped of certain
chemical groups, which gives the compound the ability to "soak up fats." Some
vendors claim that chitosan can even "capture" cholesterol and help
lowering cholesterol blood levels.
In the past, it has been used
to
detoxifying water. When spread over the surface of water, chitosan
would absorb toxic substances such as greases, oils, or dangerous
metals. Chitosan was already popular all over the world in water
purification plants and has just been introduced recently as a weight
loss supplement.
Thanks to its promised -almost
"magical"-
ability to bind fat and prevent it from being absorbed, Chitosan became
a very popular non-prescription weightloss pill. Hundreds of
manufacturers offer chitosan pills and some of them make promises that
seem too far fetched in many cases. Phrases like "the miracle pill", or
"Chitosan: Revolutionary discovery" are a common view in the front
pages of dieting, nutritional supplements and vitamins vendors.
Is it safe?
Chitosan is a 100% natural
fiber and no
harmful effects are anticipated. Manufaturers and advertisers claim
that no negative effects are known for Chitosan. However, these claims
are only based on informal reports since no serious or professional
clinical studies have been carried out with chitosan.
Is it effective?
Producers and advertisers of
chitosan pills
often make spectacular claims about this product. However, its
properties as a powerful weight loss product have not been
demonstrated. Some company selling chitosan pills have reported studies
to support their claims, but the reports were found to contain serious
flaws. The British
Advertising Standards Authority analzed the available
evidence and stated that "the
ability of Chitosan to prevent the absorption of enough dietary fat to
affect energy balance in humans had not been substantiated".
Moreover, when rigorous
scientific studies
were carried out, the results seriously questioned the effectiveness of
chitosan in cholesterol control, fat absorption and weight loss. Three
studies showed no improvement in cholesterol levels after taking
chitosan. Another study has found that chitosan removes an
insignificant amount of fat. This report is critical, since fat removal
is the main claim in favor of chitosan. The studies showed that taking
10 capsules of chitosan per day increased fat excretion by
only 1
gram (9 calories), which has no
significant effect on weight loss.
Hoodia
The product Hoodia takes its
name from the scientific name of the plant Hoodia gordonii,
a cactus species that grows in African deserts. Hoodia has been
consumed for ages by bushmen tribes to treat indigestion and
infections, so medicinal uses of hoodia are ancient.
Although Hoodia is commonly
advertised as
having fat binding activity, the main focus resides on the ability to
suppress appetite, probably by a chemical compound known as p57. As
soon as p57 was identified and isolated, a legal battle was set to
acquire the commercial right on this molecule. This appeared to be a
"miracle drug" with powerful activity as appetite-suppressant that
would revolutionize the weightloss industry. However, things went a
different way.
The possibility of
synthesizing p57 in the
laboratory was investigated by the pharma giant Pfizer, but after many
efforts, they concluded that p57 was too difficult to produce. The
abandoned the development of Hoodia as an appetite suppressant pill
because of this, but also because of concerns about possible unwanted
side effects on the liver caused by components present in the plant.
How does it work?
As said above, the main
claimed effect for
Hoodia with potential benefits for losing weight is that of suppressing
appetite. Hoodia pills are being heavily advertised and sold by
millions a day from thousands of different vendors. However, the
alleged benefits of hoodia in suppressing appetite have not been proven
so far. Again, as with most over-the-counter weighloss pills, no
clinical trials with human subjects have been made, and this prevents
this products from being accepted by agencies like FDA as weightloss
pills.
Is
it safe?
Hoodia is currently being used
by millions
of people and it is apparently safe for human consumption. The main
problem with Hoodia stems from its marketing success: It is so popular
that the demand largely overpasses the availability of genuine Hoodia
gordonii extracts. This plant comes only from certain African regions
and is not artificially cultivated. This means that it is impossible
that all the advertised products contain in fact genuine Hoodia.
